Two roads are always in front of Microsoft customers who want to play media files on their Windows-powered PCs. They can stay on Microsoft Road and play media files with the built-in player, the aptly named Windows Media Player. Or they can go on 3rd Party Street and get a media player developed by someone other than the Redmond-based software giant Microsoft.

On 3rd Party Street you can find an application like the South Korean corporation Gretech-developed GOM Player. This media player’s name is an acronym that stands for Gretech Online Movie Player. Get this application and you will get to enjoy the following functionality:

- Use it to play a wide range of multimedia files; or to put it other words, it provides support for numerous media types, including AVI, MP4, MKV, FLV, and WMV.
- Playlists are supported.
- Play broken AVI files (files with a broken index or files that are not completely downloaded).
- Provides support for subtitles (SMI, SRT, RT, and SUB), lets you customize the position and looks of the subtitles.
- If a codec is required to play a media file, GOM Player will tell you where you can get it. Getting codecs will be a rare occurrence as GOM Player comes equipped with all of the most popular video codecs.
- Take a screenshot of the video being played, take continuous screenshots with the Burst Capture feature.
- Video and audio customization options (adjust brightness, audio equalizer, and so on).
